Some people think that researching the past is a waste of time and money. We should instead focus on the issues of today's world. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Neglecting these urgent contemporary issues would lead to irreversible consequences for humanity, for which it is crucial for societies to focus on mitigating them.

For example, studying historical pandemics, has provided valuable knowledge about virus transmission, public health containment strategies and vaccine development, which has significantly enhanced the world's ability to respond to modern health emergencies like COVID-19. Furthermore, historical research plays a pivotal role in preserving cultural identity and fostering social cohesion, which are fundamental to ironing out social issues in the present. Understanding the history of a nation or a community helps people recognise their shared heritage, values and struggles, promoting mutual respect and tolerance among different groups.
